VDL Nedcar in Sittard-Geleen is the only large car manufacturing plant in the Netherlands. VDL Nedcar in Sittard-Geleen is an independent car manufacturer which produces cars for third parties. The company currently employs 4,500 people. This is a significant increase compared with the 1,500 employees who worked here when the VDL Group took over the company at the end of 2012. The plant has a production capacity of 200,000 cars a year based on two shifts. VDL Nedcar has a built-up business area of more than 330,000 m² and uses a highly automated production process with 1,200 industrial robots. Since opening in 1967, more than 4.9 million cars for DAF, Volvo, Smart, Mitsubishi, and MINI have been produced in Sittard-Geleen.

VDL Nedcar has produced the MINI 3-Door Hatch since 2014, the MINI Convertible since 2015, and the MINI Countryman since 2016. Starting on 1 March 2017, the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) version of the Countryman and sporty Mini John Cooper Works will be built in Sittard-Geleen as well. In August 2017, the production of the BMW X1 will start in Sittard-Geleen.
